Republic Bank's We CARE Award is a way to give recognition and appreciation to local companies whose employees are doing great things for our communities. The award was created to publicly congratulate companies who stress the four elements contained in the We CARE name itself - Community, Activity, Recognition and Enterprise.

Small Business Category (1-25 employees)Fire Protection Services
Fire Protection Services is a company providing inspections and testing of existing fire alarm and fire suppression equipment, and retrofits the latest systems into buildings needing to be brought to code. The company was founded in 2003 by Alan Lewis and Bill Stone, but the charity and benefit arm of the company, Cabo*Wabo was founded by Lewis in December 1993. It started with a party where guests were asked to bring a new or used winter coat to be donated to the homeless. Twenty-four years later, Cabo*Wabo continues to be one of our area’s greatest activist with the last event held June 16, 2007 benefiting Maryhurst. One hundred percent of all proceeds go to meet needs throughout the community.

BKD, CPAs and Advisor firm, is a 91-year old company with BKD Kentucky & Southern Indiana’s practice unit serving in Bowling Green, Owensboro, Evansville and the Louisville metro area. Their commitment to being actively involved in the community stretches to the employees who are strongly encouraged to be engaged in volunteer work. The local office is dedicated to staying active with Metro United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Salvation Army Angel Tree, American Heart Association, and others. Additionally through the Foundation arm, the MS Society, Children’s Hospital Foundation, Stage One and Crusade for Children, just to highlight a few, all benefit from their generosity.

TARC
Transit Authority of River City, since 1974, has been the major public transportation provider for five counties in Kentucky and Indiana. Their philanthropic activities are numerous and contribute greatly to improving lives of others. This year, the new “Ride to Safety” partnership with Center for Women and Families was launched, with TARC buses becoming designated safe havens for domestic violence victims in crisis. TARC buses are also designated as a mobile “Safe Place” providing shelter to those under 18 who are in a crisis situation transporting them to the YMCA Shelter House. In addition, the “Hop on Board” school outreach program is active, along with other youth-oriented programs such as TAPP with JCPS, Metro United Way’s Success by 6, the Middle School Connection and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. This is but a glimpse into the community service activities TARC is engaged both as a community servant and financial contributor.

LCM Company is an architectural design and construction management firm who has been a member of the Lexington business community since 2000. Linden Long, Owner and President, brought the philosophy of “giving back” into the company he created, and he has passed it on to his employees. As a small business they act “large” in the Lexington community by working with organizations such as Lexington Humane Society Foster Parent & Fundraiser, 2007 Habitat for Humanity Ambassador, America’s Walk for Diabetes (Juvenile Diabetes), and a financial sponsor for numerous business, festival, youth and faith-based organizations. LCM’s presence is felt throughout the Lexington community, and the company’s heart for “giving back” is well known.

Lexmark has an internal department and staff devoted entirely to developing partnerships and responding to community needs such as mentoring with the Partnership for Successful Schools One to One Reading Program at Booker T. Academy, mentoring with Big Brothers Big Sisters at Deep Springs Elementary, phone duty for KET pledge drive, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity, One to One Reading Program, Bryan Station High School Freshman Mentoring Program and donating $500,000 to the reconstruction of this high school, then delivering, setting up and installing more than 130 Lexmark products providing ongoing professional services to the school. Their active commitment to the future generation is evident through the above list and other programs including the training of 30 volunteers for the substitute teacher program in the Fayette County school system, where they save the school money and enrich the classroom with practical applications of the “set-out classroom” work.

Blood-Horse Publications
Originated in 1916 in Lexington, the Blood-Horse magazine is published by an independent subsidiary of the Thorougbred Owners and Breeders Association. Its staff has a sense of loyalty to the past, and an eye to the future. The Blood-Horse team is passionate about the Bluegrass community, and stresses giving back to the community and the horse industry. Their employees have become a national model as volunteers for the annual fund campaign for the March of Dimes by raising over $120,000 since 1998. They developed a competition where each department puts on a Friday lunch for employees to purchase, with all proceeds going to charity. This campaign culminates in a Derby Calcutta and Silent Auction.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky
Since the Toyota plant opened its doors in Georgetown in 1986, they have had a steady growth in community involvement and volunteerism. It's VIP Program (Volunteers in Place) encourages and recognizes team member volunteers' work and also creates a network to respond to needs in communities where Toyota team members live. Volunteerism has always been a part of Toyota's annual plan and has been a focus since 1994. For example, they hold a United Way Day of Work, in which employees volunteer an entire day of work (paid by the company) to various organizations. They paint, clean, repair and do whatever needs to be done in the community. Last year, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Toyota team members coordinated and gathered supplies for those affected, and arranged for transport of the items. Team members delivered 15 truckloads of supplies to the Gulf Coast region within 14 days of the hurricane

Bedrock Inc. is an information technology company that provides web hosting and other web-oriented services. USA Cares, created by Bedrock owner Roger Stradley, has the stated mission of helping U.S. servicemen and women and their families get through challenging financial conditions. Bedrock Inc./USA Cares has assisted over 1,000 military families in almost every state and oversees.
Elite Homes, Inc., developers and custom builders for subdivisions such as Woods of Landis Lakes, Monticello Parke and The Reserve at L—Esprit, also do extensive remodeling and renovation in the Louisville area. President Joseph A. Pusateri is credited as being instrumental in coordinating the efforts to save the Louisville Orchestra from folding.
